KeymasterThe Health Department has gotten a request to give patients at the nursing home vaccinations such as flu shots. Has anyone else gotten requests for this service. We do give vaccinations to the staff but have not given vaccinations to patients.

KeymasterWe give flu shots and pneumonia shots to the patients and staff at our local nursing home every year. We use VaxCare for those who have Medicare or private insurance, and this nursing home pays for those who are uninsured, and we charge $20 each.

KeymasterLet me clarify. We use 317 vaccine for uninsured adults, but we sometimes run out, so then we’ll use our own private stock. That is when we charge $20 each.

KeymasterWe have not been asked this question here at Franklin County. However, if you are contracted with Medicare/Medicaid you should be able to bill Medicare and get reimbursed for the vaccine. I can only imagine with the population you are going to be servicing they would not have any other types of insurance.

KeymasterBenton County HD does a few of our in County Care Facilities as well. We do the same as Corrie. VaxCare for Medicare/Medicaid/Private Insurance (although the Medicaid are done as Partner Bill then we do the billing in-house ourselves, but we are able to use VC vaccine and do not have to purchase any private stock anymore, which is very nice.) and 317 or Private stock for all others. We also work with them to do the Pnuemovax and Prevnar as well. It works out pretty well, we require they send us a copy of each residents face sheet beforehand and we run the insurance and compile a list of each vaccine type. We make the facility be in charge of receiving consent approval for the patient if they are not capable of consenting on their own. It works out pretty well. When we go they provide us with a staff member that knows all the patients and a cart for our staff to wheel around and we get everyone done in just a few hours.

KeymasterJust like Erica, we also do all the insurance leg work beforehand. Everything is pre-planned and as well laid out as possible. It is complicated, but since we’ve done it several years, we have most of their residents’ and staff’s insurance on file, so that makes it easier now. We have the nursing home fill out insurance paperwork so that we can run their insurance ahead of time. They also have to fill out a consent form for each person and have them sign it or their guardian. Then I make a list of everyone getting shots and their insurance status and which stock we are giving them (VaxCare, 317 or private stock). Then when we get to the nursing home, they are waiting on us and have all of their residents in the lobby and dining room, and they line them all up, bring them through, and just tell us who they are so we can get out their consent form and so we know what stock to give them from looking at the list. We do the same for schools and any other satellite flu clinic we are going to, which is 14 places total. If you would like more information or a copy of our forms, please call me at 573-226-3914.
