Hi Sarah–

Grundy County started billing private insurance several years ago when VaxCare wouldn’t take us, we felt like we had no choice.

We surveyed our largest employers to see who their insurance company was and we started with that. When you get Blue Cross and United Healthcare, that’s most of it and then we’ve just added on other smaller carriers as we go. The State helped us with a list of insurance contact people so we’d know who to call to request a contract.

We do not have an EHR and have been using TransactRx to bill. It’s not great, but it works.

One of the most challenging things is getting the remittance advice from the carrier. Some will send paper, others have a portal you have to register for. It would probably be a lot easier if we had an EHR.

We are billing for COVID vaccine administration and got a check today.
